1. Q:

Why is it called MBT?

    A:

MBT stands for “Masai Barefoot Technology.” The product name was inspired by the Masai tribe of Africa. Their elegant upright posture and lack of joint and back problems are attributed to walking on uneven, natural surfaces — which is emulated when wearing MBTs.

2. Q:

2. Why is MBT the anti-shoe?

    A:

Conventional shoes stabilize and cushion the foot in an unnatural way. The unique sole construction of MBT creates a natural instability and activates the "natural cushioning system" (small muscles around the joints).  MBT is the functional antithesis of a conventional shoe and therefore the anti-shoe.

3. Q:

How can I choose a right size for my MBT shoes?

    A:

MBTs start from a size 35 to 41 in the women’s range and 39 to 47 2/3 in the men’s range. MBT sizing is different therefore your size will vary depending on the styles. For more information, please click Size Guide.

4. Q:

Can they help me to lose weight?

    A:

MBTs will help you become more active consuming more energy during the course of your normal activities of daily living. Wearing the MBTs during aerobic exercise will help you burn more calories, thus helping to lose weight and gain a more sculpted appearance.

5. Q:

What ages can wear MBT shoes?

    A:

The suitability of MBT is not based on age but on fit and ability to walk properly and comfortably in the MBTs. As long as there is a good fit and there is adequate strength around the foot and ankle to walk with a good gait pattern, MBTs are appropriate. In general, there is no upper age limit but children younger than ten may have difficulty with the current range of MBTs.

6. Q:

How long should I wear my MBTs for at first?

    A:

MBT usage should be between 1 to 2 hours per day for the first week, and then gradually building up the time, until the MBT can be comfortably worn for over 2 hours, by which time muscle activation and proprioceptive feedback are sufficiently attuned to wear the MBT all day, every day. Basically, there's just one simple rule: listen to your body!

7. Q:

Can I do the following in my MBTs: squash, badminton, tennis and football?

    A:

MBT is designed as an instability shoe to stimulate the muscles responsible for posture and balance. It replicates walking on an uneven surface: so imagine playing squash etc on uneven ground. Therefore it's not suitable to wear MBTs for agility sports in general (such as racquet sports, football or dancing).

8. Q:

Does body weight have an influence on wearing MBTs?

    A:

No. Due to the complex nature of the technology in the Masai Sensor, so you could set your mind at rest to wear MBTs to enjoy your time. And please noticed that MBTs will disintegrate if put in the washing machine, and they cannot be repaired.

9. Q:

I love my MBTs and want to wear them all of the time, but I'm getting blisters on my heels, what can I do?

    A:

Do you have the right size? MBTs should be snug on the instep, tight on the heel and comfortable on the toe. If there is any slipping at the heel it is possible that they are too large for you, or if your foot feels as though it is struggling to move but can't, it may be that they are too small. In either case you need to return to the dealer where you bought them so that they can check the fitting.

Are your laces tight enough? It might seem obvious that you'd need to do up your shoes tightly but this does really make a difference. Pull the laces firmly from the very front of the foot to ensure that the foot is held snugly and does not slip. You will usually gain about an inch of lace by doing this and, for most people, this will be enough to make sure they stay snug.

What socks are you wearing? The type of socks you wear is really important as the wrong ones will increase heat and friction which may cause blisters. We recommend that you wear good quality sports socks made from a breathable material that cover the ankle completely (i.e. not 'rainer socks'? Do not wear tights, pop socks, or socks made from polyester or nylon; and do not wear any style other than the Kisumu sandal with bare feet. It might also be a good idea to try anti-blister socks which have a double layer of fabric so that the outer layer moves with the shoe but the layer next to the skin does not, therefore reducing friction.

Extra measures If the above things do not have any affect you might need to try gel pads as some people find that the shape of their ankle might not be compatible with the shape of the MBT inner heel, for example their heel or ankle may be thin or bony.

10. Q:

My MBTs are dirty. What can I do?

    A:

Can I just put them in the washing machine? No. Due to the complex nature of the technology in the Masai Sensor, MBTs will disintegrate if put in the washing machine, and they cannot be repaired.

Can I get them wet? No. Due to the complex nature of the technology in the Masai Sensor, MBTs will disintegrate if put in the washing machine, and they cannot be repaired. MBTs should not be put in an oven, microwave, or under a grill! Believe it or not people have tried, and it has never ended well!

The correct method: The sole construction and Masai Sensor of MBTs should not be exposed to aggressive liquids (acids or disinfectants), salt, oil, manure, blood, protein, grease, fertilisers or mud. If they are exposed to these substances they must be cleaned as soon as possible.
To wash MBTs thoroughly inside and out, use a soft brush (old tooth brush/nail brush) and clear mild liquid hand soap with water up to 30°c. Remember to dry them upside down so that the water drains away from the sole It is best to clean your soiled MBTs immediately so that dirt does not become ingrained
